Ingredients

  • For the Fritters:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups peeled and diced apples (use Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)
  • For the Glaze (optional but delicious):
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Batter : In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. In another bowl, whisk milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined — don’t overmix. Gently fold in the diced apples.
  • Step 2: Heat the Oil : In a deep skillet or pot, pour oil to about 1½ inches deep. Heat over medium-high until the oil reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test it by dropping a bit of batter — it should sizzle and float immediately.
  • Step 3: Fry the Fritters : Drop spoonfuls of batter (about ¼ cup each) carefully into the hot oil. Fry 2–3 fritters at a time, turning once, until golden brown (about 2–3 minutes per side). Remove and drain on paper towels or a wire rack.
  • Step 4: Add the Glaze : In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip warm fritters in the glaze or drizzle it over the top. Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
