1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Shiraz)
1 large orange, sliced (plus extra slices for garnish)
3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
3–4 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise pods
1 teaspoon whole allspice berries (optional)
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger or ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ cup brandy (optional, for a stronger drink)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients : Wash and slice the orange. Gather your spices — cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and allspice.
Step 2: Combine in a Saucepan : In a large saucepan or pot, add the wine, orange slices, honey, and all the spices. Stir gently to combine.
Step 3: Heat Slowly : Warm over medium-low heat for about 15–20 minutes. Do not let the mixture boil; it should only steam gently to infuse flavors.
Step 4: Add Brandy (Optional) : Once aromatic, remove from heat and stir in brandy for extra warmth and depth of flavor.
Step 5: Strain and Serve : Strain out the spices and orange slices, pour the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses, and garnish with a fresh orange slice and a cinnamon stick.
